Artist Shepard Fairey became a star by drawing the iconic Obama posters c. 2008–but a pro wrestler gave him his 1st claim to fame!
In 1989, Fairey made a stencil of Andre the Giant which he turned into a trendy “street art” campaign called “Andre the Giant Has a Posse.” Through the 90s, he and his fans pasted this stencil onto buildings and street signs around the world.
Reportedly, the WWF complained, so Fairey streamlined Andre’s face, with a run-in from Roddy Piper’s movie “They Live”! He paired the new stencil with the slogan, “OBEY”–apparently a reference to prop posters in that movie. “The OBEY sticker attempts to stimulate curiosity and bring people to question both the sticker and their relationship with their surroundings,” says Fairey on his website.
The Andre stencil has taken on a life of its own, and can now be found in art museums and various merchandise sold by Fairey.
Who needs an Andre Memorial Trophy when you can have something cool like that?!
