Los Angeles, CA – Streaming giant Netflix has dropped a surprise 6-part documentary focusing on the extraordinary career and sordid life of former WWF president, Jack Tunney.
The original Netflix series, produced by Bill Simmons and Zara Duffy, pulls the curtain back on the quiet, yet forceful wrestling promoter and company leader. Director Chris Smith digs into the man behind the suit, taking the audience on a fascinating journey.
Interviews from various professional wrestling personalities and archival footage help paint a vivid picture of Jack Tunney. Old time fans and newcomers learn of his humble upbringing in Toronto to reaching the dizzying heights as the president of the World Wrestling Federation.
Highlights include Tunney stripping “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase of the WWF Championship, announcing “The Ultimate Challenge”, and overseeing the King Of The Ring. We learn of the former president’s methodical decision-making process, agonizing over suspending crooked referee Danny Davis, restricting Demolition to just two members, and the controversial coin toss between Bret Hart and Lex Luger.
Fan reaction to the documentary has been overwhelmingly popular.
“I never knew he ran WWF with such an iron fist,” said longtime fan Sharon Kruplik. “Or that he had so many tawdry affairs with Hollywood starlets.”
“Finally, we get the definitive Jack Tunney story. Netflix really did their homework on this one,” said Pro Wrestling Torch’s Wade Keller.
While most have enjoyed “Mr. Tunney” the family of legendary manager Bobby Heenan released a statement, saying “He’s still the greatest leader since Noriega.”
