I really hate when they have to do that sort of thing because of royalty issues.
Would it really cost WWE that much to suck it up and pay for the rights to that song? It’s not like Steamboat appears on TV on a weekly basis. One DVD every few months at best. The new theme dubbed over with phantom Fink is the most disgusting act of butchering their video library, other than pretending Chris Benoit never existed.
They don’t want to spend any more money then they absolutely have to.
It’s one of the more defining pieces of music of the era. That would be like losing the rights to Real American and dubbing over it with American Made, or dubbing over Bret Hart’s theme music with the Hart Dynasty remix version. It ruins the fun and nostalgia of things, and re-recording Fink over anything is terrible, let alone memorable calls of new Champions.
Why did WWE remix Bret Hart’s classic Hart Foundation theme? It’s the music they use on the new Bret Hart Dungeon collection dvd.
