WCW Monday Nitro Debut

Labor Day is upon us in the US of A, and as weird as it sounds, any time I think of this holiday I think of WCW Monday Nitro. Despite today’s logic telling us that holidays are always awful for ratings, Nitro actually DEBUTED on Labor Day in 1995. Yes, almost THIRTY YEARS AGO. If that doesn’t make you feel old, I don’t know what will. I probably better answer some questions before we all have to head to the old folks home. To the mailbag!

Rob N kicks us off with…”How does RD Reynolds and family celebrate Labor Day?”

After that intro, maybe I’ll go back and watch the first Nitro?

Aaron P wants to know…”With the passing of “Sycho” Sid “Vicious” Eudy, my question to you is this: When a wrestler passes away, do you go back through any inductions involving them and reconsider whether they should be removed out of respect to the deceased, or do you think it’s best to remember them as they were, no matter what WrestleCrappy matches or gimmicks they were saddled with?”

That’s a really good question. I probably have done that from time to time in the past, but generally I don’t, for better or worse. My goal has always been to point the finger at crappy creative, not the guys and gals that usually did the best with what they were given. I tend to leave what we’ve put up as is. Again, that’s not a hard and fast rule, but what we tend to do around here.

Araña Z. continues with the psycho questions with…”Why hasn’t Sid Vicious been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame and will he be inducted now?”

I honestly have no idea why they never inducted Sid, but for sure he’ll be going in now. Allow me again to state my position on the WWE Hall of Fame – it’s a cash grab by the company to get money via another event. There’s no criteria to be in. There’s no building. It would be very cool for them to make a physical location where folks could see old props, meet and greet legends (and give THOSE guys a payday, come on), etc.. Then I might consider it something legitimate.

Thomas M brings the stench with…”Who sucks more – Dominik Mysterio, Dink the Clown, or Scrappy Doo?”

Scrappy Doo. I was never a big fan of that cartoon, but once he showed up I am pretty sure I never watched it again. I have no idea why so many cartoons decided having a plunky pint-sized partner was a good idea, but it always sucked.

Johnny C signs up with…”When you’ve attended autograph shows, wrestling-related or otherwise, as an attendee and not one of the signers, what have been your best and worst, respectively, interactions with celebrities?”

I think I’ve only ever attended something like that once where I paid for it, and that was a sound check for my favorite band ever, Extreme, last year. That was a lot of fun, as I had never seen them live despite loving their music since the early 90s. Plus Gary Cherone and I talked a bit about Batman 66 (I was wearing one of the shirts I’d wear on Joker’s Mustache). I’ve met “Weird Al” many times, but again, that was before you paid for such a thing. He was always great, super nice, and taught me in many ways how I thought my readers should be treated – with respect and appreciation. As to the worst, it wasn’t really a signing or anything, but Jim Ross has always come across in person as a crotchety dude. It’s weird, because Blade did that Angry Jim character YEARS before we ever met Ross in person, but in the limited interactions I’ve had with Ross, that’s not a far cry from what I witnessed!

Craig B wants to know…”What’s the worst kayfabe break in wrestling history? Something that no one could watch and still believe wrestling is real.”

God bless him, he’s a great guy, but remember when Hornswoggle painted a hole in a wall and ran through it like a cartoon character?

Yep, that one.

Forest G puts on the pink and black and asks…”Is Bret Hart overrated or underrated? I’d say underrated based on the time period. He was a draw, but the numbers didn’t show it”

Bret was my favorite wrestler for many, many years, so he was never underrated by me. I always thought he was a far more interesting guy than pretty much any of the folks of his generation. His matches always had a logic to them I personally enjoyed. He was great.

Ryan T ponders…”In honour of Bash In Berlin this weekend, favourite German band/musician?”

Scorpions are German, right? If so, them. If not, that chick that sings “99 Luftballoons”.

David N brings the money with…”Shane McMahon is All Elite? Will he be “taking over” AEW?”

That was kinda my feeling with Mox’s weird “this company isn’t yours anymore” line this past week. That or Mox had too many chairshots and thought that Tony Schiavone was the owner of AEW.

Chris K asks the age old question…”What’s your favorite pizza topping? Mine’s plain but I like others.”

I’m very simple – I like sausage and pepperoni. Sometimes throw some bacon or ricotta on there depending on the mood. Outside of the sauce, I NEVER want vegetables on pizza.

Save those for soups, not pizza!

And with that I bid you adieu for another week. Say something nice to someone you don’t know today and keep sending in those questions here!
