It Came From YouTube: WWF “Superstars Of Wrestling” commercial with creepy song

This is a 1987 Sky Channel U.K commercial for WWF “Superstars Of Wrestling” featuring The Miami Sound Machine song “Bad Boy” which was a big hit at the time.

I want you to really pay attention to the lyrics of the song- especially the verses.

Now ask yourself is this was really the most appropriate choice of songs?

I mean, I know Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine were really big at the time, but the song is all about how “Bad Boys” turn the woman on!

So yes, men like Hillbilly Jim and King Kong Bundy get the woman all excited!

Maybe Hillbilly Jim’s secret ability to turn women on lies in his hat? His dog-wrestling abilities? His skills in Moonshine refinery? I don’t know…

I think what happened here is that somebody in the WWF Marketing Department listened to the catchy melody, and the lyrics of the chorus and didn’t pay much attention to the verses (or they thought nobody else would).

The Miami Sound Machine’s music might be a bit dated, but you can’t deny that the song is really catchy, so I guess it isn’t such a bad choice after all.

Come on it was the 80’s. It could have been a song about a serial killer with people chained in a basement and so long as it had a catchy beat you go with it. It’s sad about today’s crappy product when I felt more compelled by watching The Moondogs in that clip than 99% of the WWE roster or the even more hideous TNA.

Is it much worse than Saturday Night’s Main Event using “Obsession” by Animotion as its theme?

  3. TMS says:

I’m surprised they didn’t just change the lyrics a bit like they tend to do, or at least play the opening over and over on a repeat loop to leave out the fact that the song is actually about guys that make Gloria Estefan all hot and bothered.

I remember when this aired as filler for Saturday Night’s Main Event.

    They also did Billy Ocean

I didn’t think Sky was around until 1990.

I don’t think this was exclusive to Sky- I’ve seen it before, unless it was on Youtube in the time since that became a thing. And I’d rather watch this video on repeat than Raw or Smackdown any week.

They also used this video on an episode in December 1986 on Superstars of Wrestling as a recap of some of the goings-on in the WWF in 1986. I still have it on VHS. They had another video that featured “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” with Wang Chung playing during a bunch of WWF clips from 1986. How I miss the WWF of the 80s.
