The Honky Tonk Man recently cut a promo on Randy Savage at the suggestion of Bill Apter.

You know, the same Randy Savage who died in 2011?

Yeah, him.

To be fair, this was Bill’s idea, but Honky could have said “No, I don’t want to do that because that’s pointless and disrespects the memory of Randy”.

But he didn’t…

It wasn’t nearly as offensive as it’s made out to be. It’s a dude playing a role. If it helps, I think of it like Macho Man, Miss Elizabeth and Honky Tonk are characters, and Randy Poffo, Elizabeth Hulette and Wayne Ferris are real people. Apter could’ve went with somebody else, but he went with what was said, and even if tact got lost in that moment, I don’t feel any offense was intended. If anything, it puts Savage over as Honky Tonk’s greatest opponent (which is how we got here in the first place).

I still think it’s stupid. Besides, from everything I’ve read there really wasn’t much of a difference between Randy Poffo and the Randy Savage character.

Agreed on it being pointless, but didn’t bother me beyond just seeming like a waste of time that could have been better spent cutting a promo on nearly anyone else. Would have been funny to hear Honky Tonk Man ripping into John Cena for example.

Hm, I think they were just trying to do an in-character, retro style promo for old time’s sake, as if they were on Wrestling Challenge back in the 80s again. Like asking Dan Aykroyd to do an Elwood Blues bit for you.

It’s not like they were a lot of great Honky feuds in the back then to go with. They were the epic Hillbilly Jim battles in 1989 or the classic tag wars between Rythmn & Blues and The Bushwhackers. This was just a goofy one time thing and not like Vince basing storylines on Eddy Guerrero after he had died.

I dunno, I think the modern fans could sit through an hour match that’s not an iron match if it were to just happen. Example; there was a Raw in ’07 where Shawn Michaels and Cena had an hour long match and it was a pretty spectacular match. It wasn’t even advertised as a match that was going to be an hour, it was for all intents and purposes for the people at home billed as a regular match that one would expect to last maybe 15 minutes? Instead, we got this match that was an hour long and no one in the live attendance was sitting down, it was great. Of course, it’s got to be the right people with the right chemistry with each other coz you can’t be have an hour match with Just Joe and Funaki and expect it to be a match of the year contender but I digress.

I didn’t see anything wrong with that at all. It was a cookie cutter promo and he was extra nice to Randy and put him over big time. Honky Tonk was actually pretty classy about it.

I found absolutely nothing offensive about this at all
