It Came From YouTube: Bob Holly as Thurman “Sparky” Plugg debut vignette

After R.D posted his review of Bob Holly’s new autobiography, I simply had to post this one.

Here’s Bob Holly’s 1994 WWF debut vignette as race car driver Thurman “Sparky” Plugg.

With a stupid name and gimmick like this, you can almost excuse him for turning into such a bitter, angry, bullying jerk.

He at least looked the part with the mullet and he had the southern drawl going, I’ll give him that much.

You know what I never got about this gimmick (I mean aside from the fact that it’s another one of those “wrestling is my side-job” things)?

His initials were supposed to be S.T.P (like the motor oil) for “Sparky” Thurman Plugg. But he was always referred to as Thurman “Sparky” Plugg so it didn’t really get through to the audience.

Later in 1994 he just became Bob “Spark Plug” Holly and remarkably fans continued to not give two craps about him for quite a few years.

In the 1994 WWF Year-In-Review episode of “Joe Vs. The World”, Joe Gagne speculates that the boys in the back started calling him “Butt Plug” which may have sent him over the edge…

  1. Art0Donnell says:

Note the alternative spelling of “Spark(e)y” on his car.

  2. Down With OPC says:

I like how it seems like he stopped in the middle of the race to tell us he was going to be wrestling.

  3. Wrestlecrap's Janitor says:

One of the worst gimmicks IMHO and it cemented Bob Holly as nothing more than a joke in my book.

He has as much charisma as Lance Storm in drag.
